Library Education for Users and Staff

For patrons library instruction are programs that teach the patrons how to organize their materials, do proper research by learning how to use research tools, and encouraging critical thinking.  Instruction can include using the library catalog or bibliographic databases.

 

Patrons who participate in library instruction are actively reinforcing information literacy. Information literacy is the set of skill needed to recognize, locate, evaluate and use the information.

 

Library instruction promotes and develops information literacy skills that will foster lifelong learning, by showing how the library offers tools to assist in research.  Helping the patrons to understand that the use of these skills creates new knowledge. 

I believe libraries emphasized information literacy, because these skills can enable the patrons to find the needed information more efficiently.  They will be able to evaluate the sources they find effectively so they can use the new knowledge to accomplish their goals.

For employees, training provides the skills needed to improve work performance. This is very important with increased technological development.  It is important for employees to continually improve their professional and technical skills, as well as nurture team development.

Library education can come in a variety of forms, from video walk through, PowerPoint and Prezi presentations, annotated bibliographies, and evaluating and sharing new technology. 

The assignments below will demonstrate my competencies in delivering basic library user and library staff education and the use of library resources.

Bailey, Donna. Noise and Fumes. F. Watts, 1991.

 

The book discusses the different types of air pollution in a way that is easy for children to understand.  The topic includes ozone level, fumes, acid rain, greenhouse effect, and noise pollution.The book was chosen for its use and breakdown of technical terms.  The book uses cartoons, photographs, and infographics.  The book includes a glossary of terms.  The information given is still relevant to present-day. The publisher Franklin Watts, is an imprint of Scholastic books. The book was found on the Lake County Library’s OPAC.

 

 

Bailey, Donna. Protecting Nature. Franklin Watts, 1991.

 

Bailey teaches children about the threats to nature, and introduces them to terms such as herbicide, insecticides, and pesticide. This book does not focus only on the dangers to the environment, but focuses more on how children can help to protect the environment. The book includes a glossary of technical terms that may be new to young readers.  In the back is an alphabetized index of key terms. The book is part of What We Can Do About series. The publisher Franklin Watts, is an imprint of Scholastic books.  Protecting Nature was found on the Lake County Public Library’s OPAC.

The National Geographic Kids web edition of the magazine’s article discusses the amount of trash that is produced and uses analogies that children can understand.  The article provides tips on how to reduce plastic waste.  This article was chosen because it takes the time to discuss the plastic water bottle problem that is hurting the environment. The magazine is part of the National Geographic Society, which has been publishing educational information since 1888.  The link to the online magazine was found through the print version of National Geographic Kids through the Lake County Public Library.

 

 

Health for Children. Environmental Health. Schlessinger Media, 2005.

 

This video teaches children about air, water, and noise pollution; and what causes them. This video is ideal for children k-4.  Children will learn to help the environment by using the Three R’s –reduce, reuse, and recycle. Schlessinger Media is a distributor for education videos.  The DVD comes with a Teacher’s Guide as a supplement to the video. The book was found on the Lake County Public Library’s OPAC.

 

 

Herda, D. J. Environmental America. Millbrook Press, 1991.

 

The book focuses on the North Central States of the United States.  It describes the different environments (biomes) in this region. Herda, describes the how our diminishing habitat, and poor crops have links to pollution.  Recycling is discussed as a way to reduce waste and the amount that each person contributes to the landfills. The author explains in great detail the different types of pollution that effect our environment. This book contains a bibliography for the information used.  The author has written over forty books, and has authored several thousand newspaper and magazine articles.This book was found browsing the collection at the Lake County Public Library in Merrillville, Indiana.

Learn about Pollution video is an animation that describes air, water, soil, and noise pollution.  The video breaks down the definition of pollution, thecauses, the effects, and informs how children can help to control pollution.  Learning Junction, an online source of short videos created this video for children. This video was found on YouTube.

This site offers instructions for science experiments for grades K-12.  Hands on science experiments demonstrate the effects of pollution for students. Sciencing is a website created by science enthusiast for other science enthusiasts.  The site was found through a Google search for “What is pollution.”

 

 

“Things to Consider when Buying Something New.” New York State Conservationist for Kids, 2017, pp. 4–5.

 

New York State Conservationist for Kids has articles focused on the protection and preservation of the environment.  The article Things to Consider When buying Something New asks children to stop and think about what a product is made out of, how much packaging it contains, and how often they will use it.  The article was chosen to help children make more responsible decisions when asking for products, which can form a lifelong habit.  Information was compiled from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.  The article was found through Lake County Public Library’s OCLC WorldCat.

 

“Tox Town - Environmental health concerns and toxic chemicals where you live, work and play.”U.S. National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, toxtown.nlm.nih.gov/.

 

Tox Town is an interactive learning tool that teaches where toxic chemicals can be found in everyday locations.  There are links to chemical information.  The target audience is elementary-school level students. The site creates interest by its use of bright colors, animation, graphics and sounds.   There are resources for educators.  The U.S. National Library of Medicine created the website.  The site was found by searching the Hillsborough Community College Library’s Online subject directory (http://libguides.hccfl.edu/subjectweb) under Environmental Science.

What is Pollution & its Types and Prevention gives a good visual of the types and causes of pollution.  This video was chosen for its coverage of pollution with entertaining visuals.  The video is under eight minutes, which is good for young attention spans.  Make Me Genius, is student created educational products that children can understand.  Their website, and social media sites have a large following. This video was found on YouTube.
